Eleven Fremantle players were in action as Peel Thunder won the 2024 WAFL Premiership by 33 points over East Perth at Optus Stadium.

Young midfield gun Neil Erasmus was named the Simpson Medallist after his 26 disposals, 11 tackles, six clearances and two goals in a performance that helped the Thunder to a 14.8 (92) to 8.11 (59) victory.

A hotly contested first term saw only three majors kicked between the two teams, with Nathan O’Driscoll continued his string of form having 10 disposals in the first quarter as he filtered through a wing and inside mid role.

Erasmus showed his fight for the contest with four tackles and seven disposals, while Matthew Taberner got the Thunder on the scoreboard with their only goal of the quarter with a snap off his opposite boot deep in the pocket.

A dominant second term saw the Thunder go into half time with a nine-point lead.

In a low scoring affair Erasmus was dangerous forward, converting two set shots while slick handball movement from half back involving Will Brodie, O’Driscoll and Cooper Simpson saw Peel open the middle of the ground before repeat efforts from Blair Bell saw the Thunder convert the best passage of play of the day.

O’Driscoll was influential again with his 19 disposals leading all-comers at the half.

Pat Voss gave Peel the perfect start to the third term losing his direct opponent for an easy chest mark and goal, East Perth responded quickly with their first consecutive goals of the day, but it was one way traffic for the remainder of the quarter as Peel outscored the Thunder six goals to three.

Gut running from Simpson and good utilisation of the short hit up kicks saw Peel chain together a nice passage of play resulting in Simpson converting his first shot at goal for the day.

O’Driscoll’s day seemed to get better and better with the young midfielder finding space inside 50 before converting a pinpoint set shot from the pocket.

Two more goals from the Thunder late in the term pushed the margin to a game high 26 points at three quarter time.

A spirted final term saw East Perth come out of the blocks hard, kicking the first two goals to reduce the margin back to 10 points and get the Royals fans on their feet, before Voss, Simpson, Wilson and Bell kicked consecutive goals within three minutes to seal the 2024 WAFL Premiership for the Thunder.
