Fremantle forward Gabby O’Sullivan says the contrast between season one of Fremantle’s AFLW side and season 10 is vast.

Speaking after the convincing 44-point win over Richmond that keeps the Club’s finals hopes alive, O’Sullivan explained the key differences in the team’s personnel now compared to her first season.

“They call us the old girls, and being back here at the old Freo headquarters and change rooms has kind of made me reflect on the olden days,” O’Sullivan said.

“I spoke to someone this week and the biggest difference is the girls coming through, they’re footballers.

“Our first team was made up of basketballers and a handful of football players.

“The young kids coming through are exciting, but I’m so glad I’m still hanging around. Turbo (Kiara Bowers) is still hanging around, and Ebony Antonio and Hayley (Miller) are still hanging around too.”

One of the standouts on the day for Freo, ten seasons on, was superstar midfielder Aisling McCarthy, who once again delivered an outstanding performance with a career-high 32 disposals, topped off by two second-half goals.

O’Sullivan spoke about the competitive nature of the midfield maestro.

“You could have told me she had 50 touches, and I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid,” O’Sullivan said.

“That girl is the ultimate competitor, and she has such a will to win.

“She’s one of the most competitive people I’ve ever come across, and I’m bloody glad we got her from West Coast because she’s been awesome.”

Fremantle were dominant across the four quarters but did the major damage in the second term, taking a 31-point lead into halftime after restricting Richmond to zero inside-50s for the quarter and just four for the half, compared to their own 28.

“Our desperation to be first to the ball and pressure the ball carrier, I know that pressure was super high, and that’s something we pride ourselves on,” O’Sullivan said.

“When we do that and put enough pressure on the ball, we can scrap it out.”

O’Sullivan said the team has everything to play for now, sitting just percentage points outside the top eight on the live ladder, setting up a must-win contest next week against the Crows.

“We spoke before the game about not getting too far ahead and just focusing on the first quarter, which I thought we did really well,” O’Sullivan said.

“Obviously that carrot is dangled now in front of us, and I can feel the belief within this group.

“We need to get it done next week.”
