Brandon Matera feels that an intense pre-season training regimen was starting to pay dividends after an impressive start to the 2019 season.

Matera has kicked seven goals in three games since coming into the Fremantle line-up in round three.

He starred for Fremantle on Saturday, kicking four goals to help Freo to a 24-point upset of GWS at UNSW Canberra Oval.

“I definitely feel a lot fitter going into the games this year,” Matera said.

“I’ve been getting used to the way we play here compared to Gold Coast and having a massive pre-season, I don’t think I missed a session. It’s definitely helping me out to get through games now.

“I feel a lot fitter, usually I'm a massive cramper which hasn’t happened in past five games so touch wood, I can keep that going.”

Of Matera’s four goals, his goal from the pocket in the third term was the highlight, breaking a tie and putting Freo six-points up.

Matera said he didn’t have time to think about the shot.

“It was a bit on instinct. I just chucked it on the boot,” Matera said.

“I didn’t know it actually went through until Sonny started celebrating. It felt like a pretty good goal but I’m just happy to see it go through."
