Small forward Sam Switkowski is quickly becoming a favourite with fans and teammates, according to Fremantle leader Reece Conca.
The second-year player was a minute away from being the hero in Freo’s four-point loss to Carlton at Optus Stadium on Sunday, with a quick snap to give Fremantle the lead in the dying stages.
The 22-year-old also played a crucial hand with a goal-saving tackle in the final term that started a play that led to a crucial Michael Walters goal.
Along with his goal, Switkowski finished with 14 disposals and five tackles.
“Switta, he’s probably my favourite player to play with,” Conca said.
“I was on the bench at the time (Switkowski kicked his goal) and I was pretty jacked up. It would have been great for him and great for us (to get the win), we just need to stick to that process and the results will come.
“Sam just does everything, his tackle pressure is incredible and that’s why he plays every week and that’s his role.
“He sticks to that role and I love playing with him, he’s a great brother.”
Conca also had praise for Cam McCarthy, who delivered on his return to the AFL with four goals.
After a string of injuries to key players, the Fremantle playing group has a ‘next man in’ philosophy and McCarthy has been the latest player to step up as a replacement for the injured Jesse Hogan.
With his four goals, McCarthy brought his season tally to 14 from seven games this season.
“Cam’s an incredible talent, as you can see when he plays,” Conca said.
“He’s a natural born goalkicker and I think he had four goals today.
“I love having him in, he’s a great character and he really lifts the boys so it’s good to see him perform well.”
