Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir said his side will lean into the lessons and learnings from a strong home-and-away season to bounce back in next week’s do-or-die semi-final.

Speaking at his post-match press conference Longmuir said he is full of belief.

“We've earned the right for a double chance, and there's multiple ways you can get to where we want to get to... there's still a path there,” Longmuir said.

“So everything we've been working on across the course of the year, we've got to lean into that now.

"We haven't been in this position much, and we'll be better for the experience.

"The facts are to get to a grand final we need to win two more games, two games in a row.

"It's not the way we wanted it to go, but we're not dead and buried. We’ve earned the right for a double chance.

"I've got full faith that we can get back to our best footy really quickly, and that starts next week.”

Breaking down the loss, Longmuir implied the performance was un-Fremantle-like, saying that multiple facets of the game didn’t flow as normal.

Despite leading inside 50s 57–51, Longmuir stated the group weren’t connected.

“Just inefficiency going inside 50. We ended up having six more inside 50s and you know 56 or 57 inside 50s for what we kick 40 points,” Longmuir said.

“I thought it didn't really function as a forward line that well.

"We seemed to have a bit of a disconnect between the midfields and the forwards at times.

"Players flying for marks together, getting each other's way... I thought our decision making was off at times.”

A contributing factor, Longmuir did not fall short of reiterating, was that the Hawks came with a plan and delivered.

“I thought Hawthorn pressured us really well early, especially inside our defensive 50 under field position pressure... they really made it hard for us to exit,” Longmuir said.

“We just couldn't manage two in a row. We'd kick a goal, and then they'd win the next centre bounce, and then they'd end up having the next shot. We just couldn't get any momentum.

"They were able to work our forwards under the ball a lot. They were able to intercept, and I thought they were able to roll off as well at times and come third man in. So yeah, credit to their backs.”

Fremantle will now face the winner of Carlton and Geelong at Optus Stadium next week, with the full fixture to be confirmed following that result on Friday.
