Mitch Crowden said Peel’s scratch match against West Coast WAFL’s team gave Fremantle’s young players a valuable chance to continue their development.
Peel fell by 39-points in a low scoring affair on Saturday at Rushton Park in what was a curtain raiser for the Fremantle v West Coast JLT Community Series clash.
The game gave the Fremantle players who missed selection in the JLT Series to test their match-fitness.
It was also the first chance for new draftees Sam Sturt and Jason Carter to test themselves against players aged over 18.
“It wasn’t the result we wanted but looking forward, everyone got a game under their belt and we think today that was the most important thing,” Crowden said.
I thought Tobe Watson down back was quite good and Lachie Schultz early was awesome.
“Boys like Jason Carter and Sam Sturt, who were playing in their senior debut, I thought they were excellent.”
Crowden lined up alongside North in the midfield as well as Peel’s Ben Howlett.
He said that he and North are both motivated to improve quickly and push for a place in Fremantle’s midfield.
“It was good to get some midfield minutes in with Tom, hopefully, we can build on that throughout the year and improve week after week,” Crowden said.
“Tom said to me that he didn’t get any kicks but he got a tonne of handballs. That means he was in and under all game, that’s his role and he’ll continue to play that.
“There is a bit of a battle going on but the boys in (the Fremantle best 22) are quite quality at the moment so I think for us, it's just to work on our weaknesses and to keep building on that to hopefully, get a gig.”
