Second-year player Ethan Hughes will play his second game of AFL football for Freo against the GWS Giants on Saturday night.

Hughes made his debut against Port Adelaide in round 23 last season, and impressed with 22 disposals.

Having only started playing at the age of 15, the 187cm defender was a relative late comer to Australian football, and his previous athletic endeavours included hockey and motocross racing.

Here’s what some of the Freo coaches have had to say about Ethan Hughes:

Ross Lyon – Senior Coach
“He’s a big boy, he runs really well, and he’s competitive. Played against Port Adelaide and acquitted himself well.”

Roger Hayden – Development Coach
“He spent some time through the midfield in the summer and has really improved his physical capabilities. He improved his size and strength in the off-season, which is an asset to an already versatile player.”

Peter Sumich – Senior Development/Assistant Coach
WAFL Watch: Rd 7 v Perth - “Played across halfback and was solid. He worked off his man at times and took some good marks and managed to kick a goal while playing as a running defender.”
