Harley Bennell’s impressive display for Peel Thunder on Saturday was soured by a late calf injury, but Freo sports science manager Jason Weber was confident in the midfielder’s ability to bounce back.

“Unfortunately, during cool down in post game he was aware of something in his calf,” Weber said.

“There’s a degree of damage there that given his history we have to respect.

“We’ll put a program in place that will step him through, but he’s in good spirits and ready to do the work required to get back.”

First-year player Harley Balic underwent a successful wrist surgery last week, and Weber said Freo were pleased with the outcome.

Long haul Lyon

“Harley had his surgical review today,” he said.

“The surgeon’s really happy with how it has progressed and now he’ll move onto the next stage of his rehabilitation.”

Anthony Morabito continues to progress well from a hamstring injury and is edging closer to a return to main training.

“Anthony’s pretty much got one session to go,” Weber said.

“We’ll tick that off and get him into football by the end of the week and look toward full football training next week.”

Ahead of Fremantle’s round one clash with the Western Bulldogs, Weber was reflective on a successful pre-season and looking forward to putting it together in competition.

“The boys have had a really good summer, we’re really happy with where they’re at”, he said.

We’re looking forward to a good performance tomorrow and getting to match committee in one piece and ready for team selection.”
