Fremantle plays its first ever game at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, and for six of the players in Adelaide for the game, it’s an extra special occasion.

Matthew Pavlich, Cam Sutcliffe, Lachie Neale, Danyle Pearce, Lee Spurr and travelling emergency Jack Hannath are all originally from or have lived in South Australia for much of their lives.

They joined the rest of the travelling party in visiting the ground on Friday morning to inspect the playing surface and change rooms and admire some of the scenery.

It has been redeveloped now, with AFL sides Port Adelaide, who Freo faces on Saturday, and Adelaide now playing their home games there.

One player who won’t be unfamiliar with the ground on game day is Spurr.

“I’ve played a number of SANFL finals there with Central Districts and also an Anzac Day game,” he said.

“It’s a great ground and it’s got tremendous heritage, so it will be nice to get back out there again with Fremantle.”

Neale and Sutcliffe remember playing junior football at the ground.

“It’s a great deck, so I can’t wait to have a run around there again,” Neale said.

“It has changed a bit since I last played there, but it’s still a beautiful venue,” Sutcliffe added.
