Ross Lyon has backed Nick Suban to bounce back from his poor showing in Saturday’s loss to Hawthorn in Launceston.

Suban, who had gained just two disposals midway through the second quarter, was subbed out of the game in favour of youngster Lachie Neale.

Lyon said in his post-match media conference that the 22-year-old’s performance had left him under “some pressure” ahead of Friday night’s Len Hall game against Richmond.

The Freo senior coach told 6PR’s Sports Today on Monday night that he had yet to speak to Suban, but he hinted that the utility might not be dropped because of one poor game.

"He didn't look to be at his best, but he's been quite solid for us this year," Lyon said.

"It's disappointing for Nick. He had a super summer and he's started the year well, but for whatever reason he was a bit off on the weekend.”

Suban had made a strong start to the season, highlighted by his 19-possession, three-goal season opener against West Coast.

Lyon also said debutant defender Tanner Smith was no certainty to go out of the side despite the impending return of All Australian full-back Luke McPharlin.

Smith, 19, performed solidly against experienced Hawthorn tall David Hale on Saturday.

Lyon said the option was always there to have McPharlin fill the hole created by the absence of injured skipper Matthew Pavlich, who is out for 4-6 weeks.

"Maybe McPharlin goes forward and Tanner Smith stays down back," he said.
