The annual match, proudly supported by Fremantle Ports, began in 2003 and has since grown to become aspecial community event on the club’s calendar.
The previous record of $80,101.60 was set in 2012. During the past 11 years the club has raised more than $540,000 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
In 2013, the round 3 match against Essendon saw more than $25,000 raised from fans as they entered Patersons Stadium, while inside the ground the club’s valuable corporate partners contributed $5000 to the cause.
A significant portion of the 2013 total was generated from the WA mining town of Kalgoorlie. Spearheaded by passionate Freo fans Phil and Haylie Dowson, the whole community got together to contribute a total $25,000 to Starlight.
The Gate Bar and Bistro were judged ‘best dressed party’ and will receive a Starlight Purple Haze Jumper for their staff’s efforts getting dressed up behind the bar – and serving purple cocktails during the game on 12 April.
Christie Haertel from The Gate said their involvement was a ‘no- brainer’.
“The staff and management at The Gate are all Dockers crazy, and we love to dress up. With Starlight being such a fantastic charity for kids, we had no doubt that our patrons would help us get behind such a great cause,” Christie said.
