The selection table
Freo - Freo’s selectors have the pleasant but unenviable task of choosing from a wide selection of players who have been playing well, both in the senior team and at WAFL level. Peter Faulks is one of those pushing hard in the state competition, while Nick Lower’s hardness could also be welcomed in the physicality that comes with a Carlton Mid Derby. Zac Dawson, Zac Clarke, Lachie Neale, Nick Suban, Antoni Grover and Alex Silvagni are also pushing hard to get back in.
WCE - The Eagles have already lost skipper Darren Glass and will wait and see if Dean Cox and Daniel Kerr are right to go following injuries from last week’s game against Brisbane.
Who’s hot
Freo - Nathan Fyfe: In his first game back following shoulder surgery earlier this season, Fyfe showed Fremantle just how much he brings to the team with a dominant half against the Power. Freo will be hoping he can continue to build from that.
WCE - Nic Naitanui: The human highlight reel was devastating against Brisbane last Sunday. His explosiveness must be kept in check if Freo wants to reverse the round 9 result.
X-Factor
Freo - Matthew Pavlich: When the two sides met in round 9, Matthew Pavlich had kicked 11 goals in the first eight rounds. The skipper has now booted 35 goals in his past eight games leading into Saturday’s Derby. Freo needs its leader to keep kicking the majors. The absence of Darren Glass could be important.
WCE -Luke Shuey: The brilliant midfielder’s absence because of suspension was evident in West Coast’s big losses to Sydney and Adelaide recently. He’s a vital component to the Eagles’ midfield.
Key match-ups
Matthew Pavlich v Eric Mackenzie: Pavlich is the form forward in the AFL. Without Darren Glass, the onus falls on Mackenzie to stand the Freo skipper.
Jon Griffin v Nic Naitanui - Perhaps the most important match-up on the field. Griffin will relish the opportunity to quell the influence of the Eagles’ brilliant young ruckman. Naitanui is rarely beaten to the hitout, so Freo’s midfielders must be primed to shark as many clearances as they can.
