On This Round in History - Round 8, 1997: Leach wins it after the siren
Do you remember this memorable moment in Freo History?
This was the first ever match between the two teams, following the Brisbane Bears’ merger with the Fiztroy Lions before the 97 season.
The Lions' line-up was littered with names that would later become synonymous with winning AFL Premierships. Young skipper Michael Voss was joined by the likes of Nigel Lappin, Jason Akermanis, Justin Leppitsch and Chris Johnson.
Freo started the game well, kicking the first three goals, but Brisbane regrouped to kick the next five.
Fremantle then steadied to reclaim the lead by three points at quarter-time.
The lead changed several times in the second term, but it was Freo who again took a small advantage into the main break.
The home side looked to have gained the ascendancy in the third quarter, racing out to a 25-point lead, before teenage Lions’ forward Daniel Bradshaw booted three quick goals to get his side back in the game.
Both sides were out on their feet in a tense final term, but it was Brisbane who edged its nose in front in the dying minutes of the game.
After Jeff White took a huge game-saving mark in the centre-square with Brisbane on the attack, Freo thrust forward one last time in the hope of winning.
Enter Quenton Leach.
With his side one-point behind, the Freo Docker marked 35m out just before the final siren sounded.
The equation was simple - a behind would leave the sides deadlocked, while a goal would give Freo the victory and forever embed Leach’s name in Fremantle Dockers’ folklore.
Kicking against a stiff breeze, Leach calmly slotted the goal to send the Subiaco Oval crowd into rapture.
Daniel Bandy and Daniel Parker were important up forward for Freo, kicking three goals each, while Andrew Wills, Luke Toia and Craig Callaghan each collected 24 possessions in the midfield.
For the Lions, Lappin was brilliant with 27 disposals, while future Brownlow Medallist Akermanis had just nine touches but kicked two goals.
