Freo's backline group at training while at their hub on the Gold Coast

Alex Pearce believes the success of Fremantle’s backline in 2020 can be attributed to a number of reasons, including working with a new system under senior coach Justin Longmuir.

Fremantle have conceded the fewest points in the AFL this season. On average, due to playing one less game than some other teams, have conceded the fifth fewest points per game.

Pearce said Longmuir’s game plan has helped Freo manage down back despite the season-ending injuries to himself, Joel Hamling and Griffin Logue.

“We try not to get caught in too many one-on-one battles - that helps at the moment as sometimes we’re a little bit undersized with Luke Ryan as our second tallest and Tay Duman or Ethan Hughes as the third tallest,” Pearce said.

“A lot of times we’re undersized so we need to help with that third man coming up. Everyone is lending a hand and helping each other, that is a big focus…even more so now that we’re a little bit under sized.

“I think it’s great the fact that the group has played together for a few years now, they get on really well and that helps things as you really want to look after the brother next to you.”

As well as Longmuir’s new game plan, Pearce said the backline had benefited from developing a good chemistry over the past few seasons.

“It’s great that the group has played together for a few years now,” Pearce said.

“They get on really well and that helps things as you really want to look after the brother next to you.”

He had particular praise for housemates Ryan and Brennan Cox, who have become a formidable duo in the key defensive roles in recent weeks.

“Lukey has played every game this season and I think his form’s gone to a new level,” Pearce said.

“He’s showing glimpses in the past couple of years but I think his consistency to keep backing it up week after week. I think he’s been easily our best player this year.

“Coxy, who’s had a bit of a change of role and got the opportunity to play back with a couple going down, he’s growth has been really good.

“He’s got a bit bigger and stronger this year, and especially his last game (against Carlton), I think he played really well.

“They’re pretty tight, the back group, and those guys out there are a tight unit. I think they’re enjoying playing together which is great to see.”
