The David Mundy meme doing the rounds on social media

If you’re a Fremantle fan that uses the internet, the chances are you’ve seen a meme doing the rounds of a digitally aged David Mundy announcing his retirement in 2048 with five premierships to his name.

Thanks to a number of Mundy’s friends, including former teammate Paul Duffield, the 330-game player has seen the meme as well, and he almost wished it wasn’t a joke.

“I’ve been sent it by quite a few people,” Mundy told ABC Radio.

“I had a good chuckle at it myself. That would be lovely going out with five (premierships) in 28 years time. That would be a great result.

“Paul Duffield, and ex Fremantle player, sent it to me and said he thought I looked like Gandalf. He said he could see me with the hat and a stick. It was quite good, I enjoyed it.”

Mundy’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2020 season. While the midfielder feels he is capable of playing on, he said he wasn’t ready to commit until there was more clarity around next season.

“Who knows what the AFL landscape is going to look like,” Mundy said.

“I certainly feel like I’m able to produce within games and run them our fairly strongly.”

“More importantly, I’m pulling up really well from games, even in the condensed fixturing we’re going through in the moment. After four or five days I feel like I’m getting back up and am ready to go for the next game.”

Mundy added that he was enjoying the task of guiding the club’s talented young midfielders, including Andrew Brayshaw, Adam Cerra and Caleb Serong.

“More than ever I’m mentally engaged in what we’re doing and really happy as a leader of the group, to really engage with the entire playing group to try and drive our culture, standards and off-field performance as best as I can,” Mundy said.

“I’m not sure what that means in terms of how many more games (I’ll play), but I certainly feel like I’m in a really good place at the moment to give everything I can to the Fremantle Football Club.”
