Lachie Schultz has been one of Fremantle’s biggest contributors on the scoreboard with 10 goals from five games so far this season.

But fellow young gun Caleb Serong believes the 23-year-old brings so much more to the table on the field.

Schutlz kicked a career-high four majors against North Melbourne at the weekend but Serong said the small forward does even more to create opportunities for his teammates.

“He does a lot of unrewarded running and unrewarded blocking. Especially for guys like ‘Tabs’ (Matt Taberner) and ‘Lobby’ (Rory Lobb),” Serong told 6PR.

“For him to get rewarded with four goals is a credit to him and very much deserved.

We value him very highly internally and we celebrate the little things he does.

“I think they do go a little bit unnoticed, so for him to get the rewarded with a few goals is fantastic.”

Despite Fremantle running out 51-point winners against the Kangaroos, Serong said Fremantle would need to improve significantly against their local rivals in Sunday’s RAC Derby.

Fremantle are looking for their first win against West Coast since 2015. Both teams had contrasting weekends in the lead up with the Eagles going down by 97 points against Geelong.

“We reviewed the game on the weekend an there were a fair few things we could get better at,” Serong said.

“While it was a great win, there’s definitely a lot of things, especially defensively we can improve on.

“We have an eight-day break so we’ll get into that and start previewing the Eagles because we all know they’re going to come out firing after a disappointing week.

“We’re going to be prepared for it and no doubt, we’re really excited to hopefully break that streak.”

Serong has his fingers crossed that key defender Brennan Cox will be available for the clash after injuring his ankle against North Melbourne.

“A lot can change in five days. I know he’s going to do everything he can to get up and he’s really keen to play,” Serong said.

“We’re all backing him in and hopefully he, the physios and the doctors can get him up.

“He’s a really important player, he’s playing some good footy and we’re a much better team with him out there.”
