This Thursday night, Fremantle will wear a special Milli Tribute Jumper as a part of the Starlight Purple Haze Game, Proudly presented by South32, against Geelong at Optus Stadium.
The 19th annual Starlight Purple Haze Game will have extra meaning as Fremantle pay tribute to Starlight Star Milli Lucas, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 14 after a long battle with cancer.
The jumper’s theme is Forever 14, drawn and designed by Milli’s sister Tess (17) and brother Joel (11).
At the heart of the jumper is Tess’ drawing of Milli with angel wings, a number 14 on her back, and holding a Starlight wand and a footy.
Joel drew the 14 stars on the jumper, with seven on each side as a thank you to Nat Fyfe, who formed a special bond with Milli throughout her battle with cancer.
The jumpers will be made for player-issue only, and the limited set will be up for auction from Thursday, with all proceeds going to the Starlight Children’s Foundation.
Milli’s mum Monica said the family was honoured to continue to be involved with the Starlight Purple Haze Game.
“For the Club, what they’ve done for us has been incredible. We don’t even know where to start for the gratitude and the thanks,” Monica said.
“When we were asked if our family could design a Milli jumper, we thought it was incredible as it shows that you’re not forgetting about our baby.
“For us, it’s incredible that the Fremantle Dockers are keeping Milli alive. It helps us grieve as her legacy is living on.”
Fremantle President Dale Alcock said the Club was proud to be able to honour Milli and her family.
“Our plans for this special occasion have been in place for some time,” Alcock said.
“Milli captured the hearts of the entire Purple Army and it was heartbreaking to farewell her earlier this year.
“Having her brother Joel and sister Tess design the jumper that the players will wear has given them something special to be part of.”
Alcock added that Freo fans will be able pay tribute to Milli during the first quarter of the game on Thursday night.
“Optus Stadium on a Freo match day was Milli’s happy place and to pay tribute to that, we encourage our fans to stand and cheer for Milli at the 14-minute mark of the first quarter as a nod to her bravery, courage and that smile!”
“I imagine it will be quite an emotional moment for everyone on Thursday night.”
The Starlight Purple Haze Game has been a club tradition since 2003, and in that time Fremantle fans, players and staff have raised more than $1.8 million.
