Mitchell (right) with his dad, will hold up the anchor on Sunday afternoon like the anchor crew members (left) did back in the day at Subiaco Oval.

Fremantle are bringing back more than just the green anchor jumper for Retro Round, thanks to 92.9 Triple M.

The anchor from the famous pre-game ritual during Fremantle’s early days at the WACA and Subiaco Oval will also make an appearance when Freo take on Richmond on Sunday.

Due to WA Government requirements, the ceremony will have to take place in the stands and will not involve the rock and rope crew - but it will be accompanied by the original version of the Fremantle Team Song.

But who is worthy of such an honour to lift the anchor?

In consultation with members of the rock and anchor crew, they have brought forward Mitchell, the son of one of the original members, Jerry Croxon.

“I am buzzing at the chance to lift the famous anchor, it’s been 13 long years it has been since my neighbour, Clay Mitchell, last picked it up at Subiaco Oval,” Mitchell said.

“When I got the call to represent Freo and the rope crew, I couldn’t turn it down.

“Growing up as a kid I remember playing footy and then racing to jump on the bus that took us to Subi and we would always be in section 145.

“I think my first game with Dad and the rope crew was when I was about 9, my step Mum, Grandma, Uncles all had a few games with the crew.

“I think I have done about five or so games walking out with the crew and the last time was in 2008 when I was 15."

Mitchell said he is now trying to get as much of the original outfit as possible.

“I’m hoping to round up all the original gear the rope crew wore back in the day,” Mitchell said.

“I think mark is dusting off some cobwebs and I’ll be wearing the overalls and beanie if it can be found.”

Mitchell said he was thrilled to see the Club embrace Retro Round, and hopes to see another famous old Freo jumper make a return in future seasons.

“I can't believe the old away jumper is coming back just for this round, it’s a good looking one and I’m already on the pre order list,” Mitchell said.

“That said, I don’t believe it’s our best jumper, one day I hope they bring out our away jumper from the year 2000 (the 3D anchor), that one is an absolute belter.”
