Season summary
Even with the lofty expectations that come with being a player of David Mundy’s calibre, his 2021 season still greatly exceeded what anyone would expect from a 36-year-old. Mundy played every game with an average of 25.1 disposals and it was only the second time in his career that he exceeded a 25-disposal average in a season. He also had an important scoreboard impact in 2021, with his 15 goals the equal-second most in his career. For Fremantle, Mundy ranked first for inside 50s, clearances and contested possessions, second for disposals and tackles, and fourth for goals.

He finished 12th in the voting for AFL Coaches Champion Player of the Year award with the most votes out of any of his teammates and was named in the All Australian squad alongside Sean Darcy. In the coaches voting, he polled the most votes five times in Freo’s wins against GWS, Hawthorn, Adelaide, North Melbourne and Collingwood. He also polled 20 Brownlow votes, 10 more than any other Fremantle player.

Mundy has finished in the top five of the Doig Medal 10 times in the past 12 seasons, and it’s an almost certainty he will lock in another top-five as he continues to be one of Freo’s best players for more than a decade.

Best game
Take your pick! Stats wise, it’s hard to go past his 30 disposals and three goals against North Melbourne, a feat that had only been achieved by seven other Fremantle players.
Against Collingwood, however, he was arguably more important, helping lead Fremantle to a crucial away win with Nat Fyfe a late out. He finished the game with 28 possessions, 12 of those contested, four clearances and six score involvements and earned a perfect 10 votes from the coaches.
He also had an equal game-high 10 ground ball gets as he helped set up Fremantle’s attack from the centre circle.
