Season summary
While Serong was often used as a tagger in 2021, he was dominant when let off the leash, amassing 30 or more disposals on five occasions. The 20-year-old was arguably Fremantle’s best in the final three rounds of the season, with 30 disposals against Brisbane, 31 disposals and two goals against West Coast, and 35 disposals and nine clearances against St Kilda. He added three important honours to his name in 2021, including the Glendinning-Allan Medal in the round 22 RAC Derby, the AFL Coaches Association Best Young Player and the 2021 AFL Goal of the Year for his remarkable snap against West Coast.

Best game
It’s hard to go past Serong’s efforts in round 22 against West Coast where he was the unanimous best on ground as the winner of the Glendinning-Allan Medal. Serong led Freo with 31 disposals and kicked two goals, highlighted by his Goal of the Year winning snap that arrested the momentum from West Coast in the final term. With Nat Fyfe and Andrew Brayshaw on the sidelines, the 20-year-old was crucial in helping lead the midfield against their more experience opponents. He became just the fourth player to have 30+ disposals and multiple goals in derby clash, joining Stephen Hill, Lachie Neale and Ben Cousins.
