Ultan Kelm in action for County Fermanagh

Fremantle’s newest Docker Ultan Kelm will have his motivation and work ethic on his side as he chases his dream of playing sport professionally in the AFL.

Fremantle have committed to sign the County Fermanagh player in the GAA, with the Northern Irishman representing his County at both senior and under 20 level in the past three years.

As well as his blistering pace, which would have seen him win the 20m sprint at most of the recent AFL combines, Kelm impressed Fremantle’s recruiters with his determination to have a career as an AFL player.

It means he didn’t let the Covid 19 pandemic stop him, despite missing out an opportunity to travel to Australia in April 2020 to show his talents to AFL recruiters.

“I’m delighted that I finally get the opportunity to join Fremantle. Right from the get go, the Fremantle recruitment team showed that they were very interested and invested in me and presented the club in a way that made the decision easy,” Kelm said.

“I’ve been watching games week in and week out from Ireland over the last two years, where I’ve developed a real interest and passion for the game. I didn’t really follow any team in particular but I usually watch the games that the Irish boys are involved in.”

Kelm fits Fremantle’s off-season goal of adding more pace to its list, with the 21-year-old looking to replicate his efforts in the GAA as a rebounding defender.

“I play most of my football at half back here in Ireland and I think I play my best when I’ve a defensive duty but also have the freedom to contribute to the attack by trying to punch holes in the oppositions defence,” Kelm said.

“I think I have the speed and agility to make a real impact from a defensive role. My main focus in the transition to AFL will be getting my feet and hands right in terms of skills with the footy and then adjusting to the tackle.”
