Just when you thought expectations of David Mundy couldn’t get any higher, Senior Coach Justin Longmuir joked about his high hopes for the midfielder in the RAC Derby while paying tribute to retired Eagle Josh Kennedy.

Mundy’s farewell home and away game at Optus Stadium comes the week after Kennedy celebrated his retirement in style for the Eagles against Adelaide with a remarkable eight goal haul.

While Mundy had 35 disposals and 15 contested possessions in his most recent Optus Stadium appearance against Melbourne, Longmuir joked that it wouldn’t be enough.

“We’re hoping for eight goals,” Longmuir said with a laugh.

“Of course, we want to make sure we send him out in the right way. We want to make sure, a bit like JK last week, we understand the significance of Dave’s career at our Club."

While Mundy is set to go out with plenty of fanfare as a part of Fremantle’s return to finals, Longmuir said Mundy would prefer a quieter exit from the game.

“We know the character he is. He probably just wants his career to finish and walk out the back door, he doesn’t like the glitz and glamour of AFL footy,” Longmuir said.

“He’s gone about his business over a number of years in a really resilient, humble and low profile way.

“That’s probably the way he’d prefer it, but you only get one opportunity to send a champion out.

“We want to make sure it’s done the right way, both as a Club and with our performance.”

Longmuir said the playing group was preparing for a high pressure contest in the wet against the Eagles on Saturday at Optus Stadium.

“(Fremantle’s wet weather football) is a work in progress, we understand that, we’re not shying away from the wet conditions and we think when we play our best footy, it can handle wet weather conditions,” Longmuir said.

“It’s going to be a good challenge for us this week.

“We understand what West Coast have been trying to do since the bye. We’re trying to make sure our players are really aware of the type of game they’re going to get and their pressure has been elite, they’re a top four pressure team since the bye.

“Last week, had a couple of things gone their way (against Adelaide), they win.”

Longmuir said Nat Fyfe (hamstring) was expected to return next week against the Giants, while Matt Taberner (calf) was targeting a return in the first week of finals.
