Andrew Brayshaw feels he’s already learning from Caleb Serong, despite the 21-year-old Freo Docker having two fewer years experience.

At 22, Brayshaw is already among the game’s best midfielders, recognised by his peers as the league’s Most Valuable Player as the winner of the Leigh Matthews Trophy.

Brayshaw feels the arrival of Serong has helped improve his own game and he can see the midfielder continuing to improve in the same manner.

This has already been illustrated in Serong’s Doig Medal finishes, placing ninth, fourth and third in his first three seasons at the Club.

“Caleb and I, we definitely push each other every week, whether it’s on the training track or in the gym and during our running programs,” Brayshaw said.

“We both make the other better players, we’re just driven to be the best we can be.

“I’ve been lucky enough to play with Nat Fyfe, David Mundy and Lachie Neale earlier on in my career and now I’ve got Caleb.

“He gives me a lot of confidence, knowing he’s there by my side. He’s always trying to work on something and that pushes me to be the best player and person I can be every week.”

Fremantle’s midfield will benefit from the addition of Jaeger O’Meara during the Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, but Brayshaw also believes Freo’s youngest mids also have the ability to make an impact in 2023.

“Matt Johnson is really explosive. He’s big and tall but is still putting on size,” Brayshaw said.

“He’s got a really nice side step and can drive out of the stoppage. He’s got a bit of pace behind him as well.

“Neil Erasmus, he is really classy, strong in the stoppage and is another one who is going to continue to build on his size but is a well-rounded player.

“Hopefully we can see both of those guys playing in our 22 next year in the midfield.

“It is really exciting and we’ve got such a young group. We’re just going to try and keep building. Who knows where we could end up?”
