A competitive beast the in the ruck, it’s clear Sean Darcy wants to be the number one big man in the AFL, however it’s not the ultimate goal for the 24-year-old.

With the arrival of Luke Jackson in the AFL Trade Period, it’s likely Darcy and Jackson will spend significant time forward as they work in tandem through the ruck.

It means Darcy may not have the opportunity to put up the big numbers he has in the past, like his RAC Derby record 56 hitouts in his Glendinning-Allan Medal winning performance in round 22 this year.

In Wednesday’s media conference, Darcy was asked if his 2023 goal was to become the league’s best ruckman.

“It’s sort of my goal, my goal is really to win each week and do what my coaches want me to perform every week,” Darcy said.

“I’ve got to be a multiple position player, it’s not just in the ruck, it’s forward and my main goal is to play in finals. That was an outstanding goal and (playing finals) was incredible.

“We’re not satisfied with that, we want to go further this year.

“Our goal is to hold the cup up, so that’s our goal every day so we’re training really hard and going after it each day.”

A Darcy-Jackson ruck combo is expected to be dangerous due to their different skillsets, with Darcy having the ability to physically dominate his opponent and Jackson able to outwork his opponent around the ground.

Darcy said Jackson’s presence at training has been a challenge that will help him grow.

“He's very athletic, so he’s probably not the push and shove player that most ruckmen are in the league,” Darcy said.

“He likes to use his nous, his athleticism to get out of my vision and go at the ball. It’s really exciting as he’s pushing me every day.”
