Fremantle's home-and-away season has ended with a loss to Carlton at Marvel Stadium by 37 points on Saturday.

Fremantle AFL senior coach Justin Longmuir made it clear that the result against the Blues will not define what comes next ahead of the 2026 Toyota AFL Finals Series.

Longmuir was pleased with Freo’s start as they raced to a four-goal lead inside the first six minutes of Round 24 but after the momentum shifted, Carlton ran away with the 18.11 (119) to 12.10 (82) win.

"Clearly we got off to a good start, and maybe that fed it as well," Longmuir said.

"From that moment on, we just couldn't control the game through the contest."

The coach was clear about the areas that needed tidying up and felt Carlton exposed a lack of aggression in defence that Longmuir says is not reflective of the team's season.

"I thought aspects of contest we got right throughout the game, but not consistently enough," he said.

"But we're better than that."

The biggest concern from the afternoon was a calf injury to defender Brennan Cox, who will undergo scans to determine whether he is available for the opening final.

Longmuir was honest about the uncertainty, while noting the Club would learn more in the days ahead.

"He's upset, but he's putting on a brave face and making sure he's giving good energy to the group," Longmuir said.

“I feel for Coxy. He's had an interrupted year, and he's been battling to get back to his best fitness and form, and he saw evidence of that.

"But he's been stopped again, so it's disappointing for him. We'll get it scanned and work out what the damage is.

"The chances are he probably misses the first final, but there's hope behind that.”

Following Fremantle's heaviest loss of the season ahead of finals, Longmuir pointed to the Club's consistency across the season as the real measure of where Fremantle stands, rather than any single result.

"I don't think there's necessarily a need to flip the switch," he said.

"You look back at last week. We played a team that was fighting for top four, not far off full strength, and thought we played, really good footy.

"If you looked across the course of the season, there's probably been no more consistent team than us.

"Our footy stacks up, and they've been able to show that more often than they haven't this year."

Fremantle now have a fortnight to reset ahead of their finals campaign, with their opponent to be confirmed following the conclusion of Round 24 on Sunday.
