The AFL inducted six players into the Australian Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night to recognise their stellar contribution to Australia’s only indigenous game.

Two West Australian players with Fremantle connections were inducted on the night with Maurice Rioli and Ray Sorrell receiving the honour.

The late Rioli, who was inducted in the Fremantle Football Club “Hall of Legends” in 2000, was the first indigenous player in 1982 to win the Norm Smith medal as best on ground in the then-VFL grand final.

Sorrell played 178 games for East and South Fremantle and was a dual Sandover Medallist in 1961 and 1963.

Other inductees include SANFL star Paul Bagshaw (seven premierships with Sturt), 1959 Brownlow Medallist Verdun Howell and two latter-day AFL multiple premiership winners in the Brisbane Lions’ Nigel Lappin and the Adelaide Crows’ Ben Hart.

The Australian Football Hall of Fame was established in 1996 and serves to recognise players, coaches, umpires, administrators, and media representatives who have made an outstanding contribution to Australian football.

Background on the new inductees follows and all previous inductees and legends are listed in the 2016 AFL Record Season Guide.
