Wednesday night's main training session will be a crucial opportunity for Fremantle to fix the issues that plagued their loss to St Kilda, according to vice-captain Andrew Brayshaw.

The 2022 MVP said the midfield accepted responsibility for Freo’s lack of scoring, kicking just two goals in the second half from 40 inside 50s.

Brayshaw said the low-quality delivery from the midfield didn’t give the forwards the best chance to capitalise.

Freo are looking to respond off a six-day break against North Melbourne on Saturday in their first home game of the season.

“It’s something we’ve got to keep training and practicing,” Brayshaw said.

“We’ve got a couple of new forwards playing their roles this year and our midfield also looks slightly different.

“The service we were giving the forwards from the midfield just wasn’t good enough and it’s something you’ve got to work into training every week and continue to build that connection.”

Brayshaw backed in both Nat Fyfe and Luke Jackson after their goalless afternoons at Marvel Stadium.

For Jackson, it was a day of almosts, missing his three shots on goal.

Outside of his accuracy, he showed his potential around the ball with nine contested possessions from his 12 disposals, as well as five tackles and three hitouts to advantage from his brief moments in the ruck.

“He’s young and definitely evolving,” Brayshaw said.

“I see him as our key forward (but) he has that ability to play ruck and give Sean Darcy a spell at times, and we even saw at times he can come into the midfield.

“His number one role in my opinion is playing key forward and he’s going to be an integral factor for us to kick a lot of goals this year and win games.”

Brayshaw added he expects Nat Fyfe to find form in his new forward role.

“He’s shown really promising signs all pre-season, similar to Luke, I think he’s going to be a massive factor for us kicking lots of goals,” Brayshaw said.

“He’s proven himself as a forward this pre-season, there’s plenty of match sims where he kicked multiple goals.

“We weren’t giving him the service we needed to give him on the weekend and that’s on the midfield just as much as it’s on the forwards.

“We’ll continue to build that connection between the mids and forwards to give him better looks at goals.”

Brayshaw is optimistic Fremantle can turn around their connection issues quickly against North Melbourne.

“Aside from a win, we’d love to make more out of our inside 50s, kick a lot more goals and work on, as JL touched on, that mid forward connection,” Brayshaw said.

“Our backs were under the pump last week and hopefully we can give them a bit more of a respite by hitting or forwards lace out and being able to set up behind that.”
