Justin Longmuir has told Matthew Johnson he will need to be adaptable as James Aish looks set to return to the wing role Johnson shared with Neil Erasmus against Essendon.

Both highly rated West Australians from the 2021 draft, Johnson and Erasmus will likely be the future of Fremantle’s midfield - but they have been cutting their teeth in several roles as they find their feet at AFL level.

Johnson had 16 disposals, seven tackles and a goal in the 32-point win against the Bombers before coming off late with a cork, while Erasmus had 12 disposals and three marks.

Aish last played against Richmond, coming off with a concussion, and missed the Bombers game with a back injury. The 27-year-old is a test this week as he hopes to get through training to become available for selection.

Fremantle will look to get their season back on track against the Western Bulldogs this Saturday at Marvel Stadium after returning to form against Essendon.

“We’ll see how we go at training. Hopefully we get Aishy back, so we’re in a good spot,” Longmuir said.

“There’s only been one week (of good football) though, so we need to make sure we have the right mindset and we build on what we did on the weekend.”

Jusitn Longmuir chats to James Aish during main training on Wednesday.

Longmuir said Liam Henry, who had 32 disposals against Essendon, and Aish will likely take the wing spots against the Western Bulldogs

“Liam played well, he’s done enough to hold that wing role that he’s been playing,” Longmuir said.

“We would like to play two genuine wingers, which we didn’t have last week.

“We’re happy with the way Ras (Erasmus) and Johnno filled in on the wing role. Aishy is a genuine winger and if he’s right, he’ll come back into the team.”

Longmuir confirmed Johnson would keep his spot with Aish returning, but will play a different role against the Bulldogs.

“What I’ve been saying to Johnno is (to play) wherever we need him and where his role fits within the team dynamic,” Longmuir said.

“Sometimes it’s mid, sometimes it’s mid / third winger. Last week, he was a little bit more on the wing.

“I’ve been really happy with the way he’s been able to adapt his game throughout the year and we’ll see what role it spits out for him, but he’ll have to adapt again.”
