Taking on the reigning premiers at their home ground was not going to be an easy task, but Fremantle midfielder Caleb Serong said it was a challenge that the whole team had embraced.

The inside midfielder finished with 29 disposals (including a game-high 17 contested), seven clearances and six tackles.

“We knew to come down here against the Cats it was going to be a contested game, and if you don’t match it with them or beat them in there you’ve got no chance,” Serong told Fox Footy post game.

“So we just embraced that and wanted to play a front half game.

“We felt like for big parts (of the game), probably aside from that third quarter, we were able to lock it into our front half and get repeat opportunities.”

Fremantle have struggled with consistency this season, having some big wins against the likes of Melbourne, Sydney and Geelong but losing their past four matches in a row.

Serong acknowledged there was still a way to go, but wins like the one against the Cats on Saturday would help build confidence.

“We just want to play some consistent footy,” Serong said.

“We’ve got a really young group and have to really keep embracing these challenges.

“Understanding that each time we get these challenges we’re going to get better and really build on this confidence and trust in ourselves.”
