Freo shock Cats in thrilling win

Fremantle captain Alex Pearce delivered a standout performance in Freo’s gutsy seven-point win over Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday.

With a game-high 15 intercept possessions, Pearce led Freo’s back line as they formed a defensive wall against Geelong’s attack.

The key defender had 18 disposals (including 11 kicks at 82 per cent efficiency), eight marks and six rebound 50s.

Pearce spent the majority of the match on power forward Tom Hawkins, before being shifted to Jeremy Cameron when Hawkins went down with an injury in the final term.

“I love coming up against great opposition and those two are as good as it gets,” Pearce told Fox Footy at the end of the match.

“I hope Tom Hawkins is ok, I saw he did a hamstring late, so best wishes to him.”

Pearce said it had been a tough month of footy for Fremantle and that the team had been keen to get a win for the Freo faithful.

“I’m just so proud of the boys, we’ve been under the pump the past few weeks and haven’t been playing our best,” Pearce said.

“We know that we’ve got that footy in us and we’ve proven that at times this year but our consistency has been an issue.

Freo now return to Perth for an eight-day break before facing the Brisbane Lions at Optus Stadium.
