Sunday’s win over St Kilda capped off an extraordinary week for Walyalup that was inspired by Indigenous forward Mikayla Morrison’s road to recovery.

In an extra special twist for Indigenous Round, the week marked a significant milestone for Morrison in her journey back from a second ACL injury in as many years.

The sharpshooter forward completed her first run on-field since her injury, in a special moment shared between teammates at Club HQ on Thursday.

Speaking post-game, skipper Hayley Miller praised Morrison for her leadership around the Club.

“I think it was perfect for her to have her first run on Thursday afternoon, it was special for us to be there and get around her,” Miller said.

“The Club goes above and beyond to honour this round and Mikayla Morrison in particular.

“The amount that she has taught each and every one of us about her culture and how proud she is, is something that I am super proud of her.

“Morro is a leader in her own right as an Indigenous player.

“It was awesome to get the win and it’s extra special when we are Walyalup and playing in our Indigenous jumper.

Club debutant Serena Gibbs also ticked off a special milestone on Sunday, pulling on the purple for the very first time in the AFLW.

Capped off with a Gatorade shower post-game, Gibbs was filled with pride as she competed hard up forward to provide a strong option for Walyalup.

“I kid you not, I have played all around Australia now and Freo definitely has the best vibe, I’d love to be back here playing again in two weeks,” Gibbs said.

“I couldn’t see (in the Gatorade shower) Ange got me right in the eyes at one point!

“I was just so proud to pull on the purple for the first time, I can’t wait to do it for many more to come.”
