Fremantle’s defensive pressure and structure was a standout in the Club’s 23-point victory over Brisbane in round one on Sunday.

Freo conceded the first four goals of the game, before restricting Brisbane to only six goals for the remaining three quarters.

Fremantle defender Jordan Clark said an all-round team defence was instrumental in getting the win, despite having only one player on the bench in the final quarter.

“The boys are really happy with today’s performance, particularly with how we hung in there,” Clark said.

“We didn’t get off to an ideal start, they are a very good side obviously but the way we fought back and to be so strong at the end there, especially with a few soldiers going down…(it was) a tough gutsy win.

“We believe if you’re on song in defence and value defence, it will give you some good looks going the other way.”

Club Captain Alex Pearce was a pillar in defence for Fremantle with the 28-year-old gathering 19 disposals and seven intercept possessions as he led the Club to a courageous victory.

“Whether it's proactive positioning, killing the ball, intercept marking, and now starting to create and look to get involved in a bit of ball movement, he’s the full package at the moment,” Clark said about Pearce.

“That’s why he’s our captain.

“It’s good to see Moose leading by example because you do walk a lot taller when he’s doing that.”

Fremantle will now have a six-day break before taking on North Melbourne next Saturday 23 March at Marvel Stadium.
