Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir says that despite an emphatic win over ladder leaders Collingwood in Round 19, his side will not be taking the Eagles lightly in Saturday’s RAC Derby 61.
Speaking at the joint RAC Derby media conference on Friday at Optus Stadium, Longmuir stated that the clash would be a maturity test for the Club.
“It’s a RAC Derby, so we need to give our best,” Longmuir said.
“I’ve been saying it for a number of weeks - it’s okay to enjoy the win on the weekend. Wins are hard to come by, especially against the best team in the competition (Collingwood), so we enjoyed it.
"But there has to be a moment where you move on and give your best to the next week.
“I feel like we’ve done that. It will be a good test of our maturity tomorrow.”
Recapping the win over the Pies, Longmuir said that while withstanding Collingwood’s pressure at the MCG and coming from behind with the final four goals to snatch victory was impressive, continuing to develop and improve key elements of the team’s game remains crucial in the hunt for finals.
“We got the win last week, but we didn’t play the game the way we would have liked,” Longmuir said.
“We still conceded a lot of inside 50s, and we did a good job to hold up under that pressure. But there is still a lot of our game that needs improving if we’re going to compete at the back end of the season.”
Collingwood enjoyed 23 more inside 50s (63–40) than Fremantle in Round 19, but were restricted to a conversion rate of just 17.5% goals per inside 50, as Freo’s defenders held firm.
Longmuir also hinted at a potential full game for midfielder Hayden Young, who returned as the substitute in Round 19 following a lengthy layoff due to a hamstring injury.
“I’m not going to talk about minutes, but he’ll come into the team and he’ll build.
“He’ll play a similar role to what he did at the back end of last year for us.”
