Fremantle High Performance Manager Phil Merriman says utility Corey Wagner made a positive return to football after overcoming heel soreness that sidelined him for two weeks.

Wagner made his comeback playing for Peel Thunder over the weekend on managed minutes, collecting 20 disposals and two tackles.

“He’s (Wagner) pulled up really well following the game at the weekend, so the plan is for him to have a normal training week and play more minutes,” Merriman said.

Midfielder Hayden Young is also edging closer to a return after suffering a groin injury in the Club’s Round 21 win over Carlton. Merriman said the 24-year-old is progressing well and is listed as a test to play for the weekend.

“He’s (Young) progressed well through the gym and has been doing some good running kilometres,” Merriman said.

Merriman also confirmed midfielder Matthew Johnson is tracking well in his recovery from an ankle injury sustained in the Club’s Round 19 win over Collingwood.

“Johnno is going well,” Merriman said.

“He’s got a few more hurdles to jump over this week.”

As announced by the Club on Sunday, forward Sam Sturt underwent knee surgery on Monday morning, requiring a reconstruction on his left knee, with Merriman confirming the success of the procedure.

“He (Sturt) woke up this morning (Monday) in good spirits and is really looking forward to attacking the next phase of his rehabilitation.”
