Fremantle All Australian defender Jordan Clark says dual Brownlow Medallist Nat Fyfe shared some words of wisdom with the playing group ahead of the Club’s Elimination Final against Gold Coast on Saturday night.
Speaking at his Monday afternoon media conference, Clark revealed that Fyfe addressed the group in what will be his last-ever game at Optus Stadium - win or lose.
“Fyfey was very balanced with how he looked at it and said, ‘as the stakes rise, the game still asks the same questions of you,’” Clark said.
“It will ask the same questions as it did in Round 10, 12, 15 and your role doesn’t change. You don’t have to do any more than you’ve done for the 23 games this year.
“He was talking about that and said it’s an experience to enjoy - don’t fear it. It’s a privilege to play in these situations, so tuck it under the wing and have a go.”
Fyfe’s last finals appearance was in 2015, when the midfielder courageously played with a fractured leg in the Preliminary Final loss to Hawthorn - still managing to gather 24 disposals and lay six tackles.
“He (Fyfe) touched on a few years ago when he was in his prime and playing finals, he felt like he had to be the guy that carried Freo over the line,” Clark shared.
“He’s now sort of flipped his mindset - he really enjoys just being part of it. He doesn’t have to be the main man and he just enjoys being involved.
“He’s like a proud older brother I think and I just love having him as part of it.
“He’s one person I really look up to on this list, and I don’t take him for granted around the Club at all.”
Previewing Fremantle’s first finals appearance since 2022, Clark said the maturity of the group would hold them in good stead against the Suns.
He emphasised that the team didn’t need to change anything from what they’ve been doing since May, having won 12 of their last 14 matches.
“A four-quarter performance, 120 minutes of football and the same way we’ve been playing the last few months,” Clark said.

“You never get 120 minutes of the game on your terms, so I do feel like Gold Coast will have momentum at some stages this week.
“But if we play the way we want to play, and we know what works for us, we’ll be very competitive.”
The running defender was unbothered by the prospect of a wet-weather clash on Saturday night.
“We’ve had a lot of wet games this year and I think our record in them is pretty good, so we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” Clark said.
“We’re a pretty mature group, so we know what’s expected of us and what we need to tinker with, whether it’s raining or dry.”
