Fremantle vice-captain Ash Brazill said there was plenty to take away from last Friday night’s nine-point loss to Carlton, praising the Club’s midfield.

Brazill reflected on the loss and saw the side won several key areas on the stats sheet but couldn’t find the reward on the scoreboard.

“It was a pretty frustrating game,” Brazill said.

“You look at the stats and we won a lot of them, pretty convincingly as well, so to see the stats and then not getting the result – it’s frustrating,” she said.

“We definitely had our moments, but Carlton just capitalised every moment they had.”

Despite the end result, Brazill was quick to shine a light on the efforts of Fremantle’s engine room.

“You look at our midfielders like Aish (McCarthy), Turbo (Bowers), Gabby (Newton) – they’re such contested beasts,” Brazill said.

“Our biggest thing is working to their strengths. Even though we didn’t get the win, our midfield at the moment are the best in the league and win or lose, they’re still performing.”

Brazill also spoke about the importance of recognising trademark moments, highlighting teammate Kiara Bowers as an example.

“You just have to look at Turbo and the acts that she does,” Brazill said.

“She tackles and then she actually picks up her opponent. She’s unbelievable – and that should drive our team more.”

Young gun Tilly Banfield booted her second AFLW goal in just her third game, seizing each moment she gets.

“Tilly is unbelievable. She came into our team so raw, and her work rate is one of the best in the team,” Brazill said.

“She’s someone who might not know the full game yet, but she wants to learn.

“For me, I look at her and I want to play for her, and I feel like my game will go to another level just because I’m beside her.

“She’ll do absolutely everything – 1v1 she’s winning the ball regardless of who she’s on, where she is, and it shows with the goals she’s been kicking.”

Midfielder Gabby Newton stood out again, amassing 28 disposals, one goal and nine tackles for the match.

“I shouldn’t say this, but (Gabby’s) my favourite player and teammate,” Brazill said.

“She’s just someone who it doesn’t matter where you put her. She could be in the backline, the mid, the forward line, throughout the whole game she’s played every position, and she does it with class.

“Her as a player is unbelievable and as a person as well – she’s incredible.

“She leads our team extremely well and yes, she’s in the leadership group now, but I’m excited to see where she’s going to end up.”

Brazill said that while Fremantle left opportunities on the table against the Blues, the group will channel the disappointment into their preparation for this week’s clash against Hawthorn.

“They’re a scary team and I think it’s a good team to come up against (for) where we’re at now,” Brazill said.

“We love being away, so hopefully that brings this momentum and drive with the group over the next couple of days before we play Hawks.”

Fremantle will play Hawthorn in Round 8 of the NAB AFLW Season on Thursday 2 October at Kinetic Stadium in Frankston, 7.15pm EST.
