Fremantle Head of Player Personnel David Walls has recapped the Club’s 2025 Telstra AFL National Draft and revealed plans for the coming days with list spots and signings.
Speaking following the conclusion of night two, Walls explained how the additions of Adam Sweid and Tobyn Murray would help bolster the Club’s forward stocks.
“Yeah, we're happy we've got the two guys that are probably pretty similar in their role, like mid/forwards,” Walls said.
“They will be able to go through the midfield in time, but both are pretty well built and pretty strong guys that we think have good running capability.
Both are low six-minute two K's, and with a good preseason, hopefully they can be pushing for selection.
“It was good in the trade period to get Judd (McVee) to give us that running half back. So, to add to that, and get a couple of guys forward we’re happy with.”
Speaking specifically on night two’s pick No.40, Walls explained his recruiting team had tracked Murray closely through a strong 2025 campaign.
“He was probably more of a midfielder when he was playing in the Falcons and after a solid year last year in the VFL, he really took his game to another level this year, probably playing more of that mid/forward roll,” Walls said.
“He had a couple of breakout games, one against GWS, where he kicked five, and that's when we really took notice and tracked him pretty closely.
“We just think that he's improved year on year, and feel that there's a role there at AFL level that he can play with his running capacity and his ability to get up and down the ground.”
Walls also revealed that following the conclusion of the National Draft, the Club will now look to sign Fremantle Next Generation Academy prospects Toby Whan and Ryda Luke as Category B Rookies on Friday.
“We'll file paperwork and put both on as Cat Bs, so we're excited about that,” Walls said.
“It was a good result for us that they didn't get a bid, and we can put them on and get them to train on Monday.”
Speaking on Whan, Walls believes he is a ready-made player.
“He's a real professional and he's been in the programs all the way through,” Walls said.
“He's done senior pre-seasons with South Fremantle, he's a strong runner, played some senior footy, is a left footer on the wing and gets up and down the ground really well.”
Walls says fellow Luke is quite raw but his physical attributes are hard to deny.
“Ryda is pretty raw, just really powerful, quick and can take a good mark,” Walls said.
“He just hasn't been in the programs or the system as long as Toby. He's going to take a little while to develop, but we’re excited with the attributes he has and look forward to getting him in and working with him.”
Walls also revealed the Club and former Collingwood premiership ruckman Mason Cox had come to an agreement for him to sign a two-year deal when the Supplementary Selection Period opens on Monday.
“We've now got a senior list of 36 with those two draftees coming on, and we've got four rookies. So, Mason (Cox) will be one of them.
“He'll come on officially on Monday and the Cat B’s will be official tomorrow.”
“Justin (Longmuir) worked with Mason at Collingwood, so they've got a relationship, but it was good for them to catch up and just talk a bit about the Club and where he sees himself, and same for Joe Brierty as well.
“The meeting went well. He understands WA and our Club and our list and he's keen.
“He's coming over to play. He's not coming over to sit down at Peel. He'll be having a massive crack.”
