Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir and key forward Josh Treacy believe that despite the narrow 10-point loss to Geelong, there were positives to take out of the game.

At halftime, Fremantle had posted 74 points on the board - the biggest first-half score during Longmuir’s tenure - but both Longmuir and Treacy said the team needs to run out games better in a long season of fixtures.

“Arguably three really good quarters of footy, especially the first quarter, and it is really good to jump into the game like we did, but a bit disappointing with how the finish was and how the result ended,” Treacy said post-match.

“We got bang-for-buck opportunities going forward in the first quarter,” Longmuir said in his post-match media conference.

“We caught Geelong on the hop a little bit in our first half and won a lot of contests in that period, which created scores.

“You're not going to score that much every quarter. But yeah, the foundations of our game were really good.

“To Geelong's credit, I thought they changed the look of the game, created more length and tried to surge the ball more, which we didn't deal with well.”

Longmuir acknowledged that the 2025 Grand Finalists were never going to accept defeat despite Fremantle’s strong start, with Longmuir identifying capitalising on opportunities later in games a focus point, noting the team's 3.8 goals in the second half.

“It’s taking a little bit away from Geelong and how they played, but yeah, you're up, you lead at every break - of course, you're disappointed with the way we handled the second half and disappointed with how we handled the last quarter,” Longmuir said.

“We didn’t defend Geelong well enough and when we did create opportunities back the other way, we didn’t finish our work, with three goals eight in the second half.”

Treacy said the team will move on quickly following the loss, take their learnings from the review and look forward to playing in front of the passionate Purple Army for the first time in 2026 when the club faces the Demons in Round 2.

“Back on the plane tonight and back home. We’ll come in Monday and review the game for what it was, take out of it what we need to, and we’ll be on to next week as early as Tuesday,” Treacy said.

“Keen to get back home and play in front of the Purple fans.

“It will be exciting to be back at Optus, so come on down and support the boys as much as you can.”
