Fremantle ruckman Zac Clarke has agreed to a one-year contract extension. The 26-year-old was out of contract and the new deal will see him remain at the club until at least the end of the 2017 season.

Playing in 13 of Fremantle’s games in 2016, Clarke collected 249 hit-outs, the second highest for a Fremantle player behind Jonathon Griffin’s total of 289.

Clarke was also crucial in Peel Thunder’s push to their maiden premiership, playing 11 games, including all four of their finals and racking up an impressive 56 hit-outs in their Grand Final win over Subiaco.

Clarke, who has recently returned from an overseas trip to Japan and Indonesia, was happy to continue his career with Freo after notching up the 100-game milestone late in 2016.

“Being overseas pushed it (contract talks) back a bit longer, but I’ve been here for a while now so it’s really good to add another year,” Clarke said.

Clarke underwent knee surgery at the end of the season and expects to recover quickly and be available for selection at the start of the season.

“I’ll be back at the club in a fortnight and training in some aspects but I won't be training just yet,” Clarke said.

“I had knee surgery straight after Peel’s Grand Final, so I’ll just work my way through rehab, but I don’t think I’ll be that far behind the rest of the group.

“I should be ready and raring to go by round one, I’m hoping to join the main group just before Christmas so that should be giving me plenty of time.”

General Manager of list management Brad Lloyd said he was pleased to see the eight-year player on board for 2017, ensuring depth in the ruck alongside Aaron Sandilands and Jonathon Griffin.

“It’s really good to agree terms with Zac for another year and we look forward to seeing him represent the club next season,” Lloyd said.

“Zac came into the club in the 2008 draft and has now played 101 games, he’s an experienced big man and will play an important role in our ruck department.”

Clarke was recruited from TAC Cup side Oakleigh Chargers with pick 37 in the 2008 national draft, having impressed with his athleticism at a junior level.

The 203cm big man – who was weighing up a career in basketball before opting to play AFL – spent most of the year developing with East Perth until his debut for Fremantle in round 13, 2009.
