Taylin Duman knows he can’t take his spot in Fremantle’s back line for granted after playing his first AFL game of the season in Sunday’s five-point win against St Kilda at Optus Stadium.

The 20-year-old made a steady return to AFL football and slotted in well with Fremantle’s back six, which performed admirably and held St Kilda to 66 points.

Luke Ryan, who had one of his career-best games, led the defence.

The intercept defender topped a number of statistical categories, including his 32 disposals, 13 marks, nine rebound 50s and 677 metres gained.

“Luke Ryan was really strong back there, Alex Pearce as well,” Duman said.

“Hopefully, we can continue to gel as a back six and my aim is to cement that spot in there.”

Duman was very active early and finished the game with 16 disposals, seven marks, five rebound 50s and five tackles.

He said he didn’t mind the pressure of needing to fight for his place in the Freo line-up.

“It definitely motivated me to try and lock down my spot and really do my bit for the team,” Duman said.

“I wanted to focus on what I need to do personally and try and do my best.

“There is a great pressure for spots back there and there are a few blokes coming back from injury soon.

“It’s a really healthy competition between us and I hope we can keep driving that when we have full availability.”
