Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe is happy to take a back seat as the club goes through the process of hiring a new senior coach.

Fremantle announced their selection committee for the role on Wednesday, which will be chaired by board member and former club captain Peter Mann and include president Dale Alcock, board member Sue Murphy, general manager of football Peter Bell and former player and Life Member Luke McPharlin.

Fyfe said that he spoke to fellow AFL captain Scott Pendlebury about the players' role in a coach search. The pair were both named in the 2019 All Australian team on Wednesday night, with Fyfe given the honour of captain of the team.

“I spoke to Scotty Pendlebury a bit about it, I think there’s a level that is appropriate but the tail can’t be wagging the dog,” Fyfe told SEN.

“I’ll give my opinion from a player point of view and a captain point of view where it’s asked, and work closely with Peter Bell and Luke McPharlin, who is on the selection committee, and also Peter Mann

“I’ll be used more of a bouncing board if questions come my way.”

Fyfe said that he thinks the modern game requires a coach that prioritises relationships and culture.

“I think the game is moving towards coaches that are good at connecting with people, building good culture, making sure that there is strong empathy and understanding,” Fyfe said.

“Whatever coach we get, hopefully, they’re supported and balanced well by an assistant coaching panel that has a range of experience and maybe some guys that are recently out of the game, along with a few assistant coaches that we already have.

“That’s a pretty broad answer and I guess you don’t really know if senior coaches are going to be a right fit or are ready until they get their hands on the steering wheel and start driving the club forward.”
