Fremantle head into Tuesday’s NAB AFLW National Draft boasting a strong hand to set Freo up with WA based talent, according to senior coach Trent Cooper.

The draft will be held at Melbourne Showgrounds, commencing at 11am AEDT (8am WST).

The AFLW draft runs significantly differently to the AFL draft, as players are able to nominate the states in which they can be selected.

While Fremantle’s draft hand may not appear strong on paper, their picks of 12, 21, 35, 51, 66, 81 and 85 provide the club with great access to the WA pool.

Cooper said that when taking into account West Coast’s picks - the only other team who can select players from WA - Fremantle are in a strong position.

“Our official draft order doesn’t really mean too much because the girls only nominate for their state,” Cooper said.

“Effectively, our draft hand equates to picks one, three, four, five, seven, nine and 10 in the WA draft.

“Obviously it’s different for us this year because West Coast are now in the competition.

“They’ve had a few trades and pre-listings so we’ve ended up with a good hand in the draft and we’re looking forward to making the most of the opportunity.”

With four of the first five picks from the WA pool, including the first pick, Cooper said Fremantle would focus on selecting the best available.

“We’re really looking for best available talent at the start of the draft,” Cooper said.

“There’s some good players who we think can add to our team in a multitude of positions towards the back end of the draft and that’s where we might be a bit more strategic.

“We’ll be thinking about role players who can do the right thing for what we need on our list at that point, depending on who we get earlier on in the draft.”

The draft will be streamed live on womens.afl , the AFL Women's App and the AFL Women's Facebook page from 10.40am AEDT (7.40am WST).
