Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir heralded captain Alex Pearce's courage in the final quarter of the Club's 38-point win over Sydney at Optus Stadium on Thursday night.

Speaking post-match, Longmuir said the courage to run back with the flight to take a huge defensive mark, which resulted in a Josh Treacy goal at the other end, sums up just who the skipper is.

“He doesn’t second-guess himself, does he?” Longmuir said.

“There’s no situation he doesn’t want to be in.

“He’s led by example all year and he just continues to do it.”

It’s not the first time Pearce has put his body on the line for the team, with the moments stacking up to his name, but Longmuir said the skipper was on from the get-go in the top-of-the-table clash against the Swans, which was a standout to him.

“The skipper came out and led from the front,” Longmuir said.

“Whenever you see a back leading his man to the ball, they’ve got good positioning and they’re reacting quicker than their opponent.

“I thought he did that from the outset, and I thought as a team we did that from the outset.

“There were a few times when we reacted first and dropped marks and they capitalised on that while winning ground balls, but I don't mind us making mistakes if they're made with the right intent.”

The win over the Swans puts an eight-point gap between Freo and the Swans on the ladder.

The Club will now travel to Adelaide to play Port on Saturday 18 July in Round 19.
