Fremantle senior coach Justin Longmuir has labelled Murphy Reid’s first Glendinning–Allan Medal in the 70-point win over West Coast on Friday night at Optus Stadium as "special".

Longmuir said that some of Reid's natural football ability is unteachable, but the 19-year-old has benefitted from a core senior group which has allowed him to play his best footy.

“He's performed pretty well in most games he's played,” Longmuir said.

“I thought he got to work at the right times tonight, and clearly when he gets the ball in his hands, something special usually happens.

“I thought his work rate was strong, and maybe you can't teach some players the stuff he does with his vision and his ability to weight kicks and do what the game needs.

“He's got a good bunch of more senior players around him that help him in certain aspects of his game.”

Reid’s performance finished with 26 disposals, six inside 50s and eight score involvements, earning him his first Glendinning–Allan Medal, making him the youngest Freo Docker to be voted best afield in a Western Derby.

Longmuir said that, as recognition of the player Reid is becoming grows, teams will start to put more attention into the second-year player, allowing him to prepare for what is to come in future years.

“Teams will start looking at different things, I guess, but I don't think we're relying on Murphy to get a certain amount of possessions for us to win either,” Longmuir said.

“I think he's got a good balance of doing what the team needs and valuing the right things in his own game as well.

“He's got some flexibility within his role to be able to work with others around him and go to different parts of the ground.

“The thing that gets lost a little bit is everyone thinks about what he does with the ball, but he's actually a very smart player in terms of manipulating the opposition as well.

“Teams will continue to throw different things at him, but hopefully we've given him some things to be able to work his way through that.”

Fremantle will be back at Optus Stadium in Round 21 on Friday 31 July, to face the Western Bulldogs.
