Fremantle midfielder Matthew Johnson has explained why he is loving his footy in 2026.

Speaking following the 37-point win over the Bulldogs, Johnson said he is just looking to get better week on week.

“I suppose just trying to play consistent footy,” Johnson said.

“Getting my processes right during the week, getting some clear things to work on during the preseason, and obviously I’ve just got a really good relationship with Smithy (Joel Corey), my midfield coach, and he's pushing me to get better every week.

"I’ve had some good opportunities this year to play some on-ball footy as well as on the wing, so it's been good fun.”

Johnson once again played a pivotal role on Friday night on Bulldogs superstar Marcus Bontempelli, earning plaudits from senior coach Justin Longmuir, along with fellow midfielder Hayden Young, for their joint effort nullifying the Bont.

“He’s had 35 and two goals the last three times we've played them, so I’m not sure what we kept him to tonight,” Longmuir said.

“I think Youngy and Johnno did a pretty good job there.

"He was one of the players that was going to take the game away from us when he gets going, and we've seen that firsthand a number of times.

"I think we did a pretty good job on him.”

Johnson explained that he loves spending his time through the midfield, but the plethora of talent the Club boasts in there is what makes them dangerous as a unit.

“I love playing in the midfield. That's where I played my junior footy, and I love being around the ball,” Johnson said.

“Obviously, there's a lot of good players that go through the midfield, and that's what makes us a great team. We've got so many damaging people that go through and have an impact.”
