Eight Fremantle players were in action in the WAFLW grand final between East Fremantle and Swan Districts, held on Saturday at Lathlain Park.

Senior coach Trent Cooper runs through his thoughts on the game.

East Fremantle 8.3 (51) def Swan Districts 4.4 (28)

East Fremantle played their best game for the year. They were really strong in an all round performance and they were too good for Swan Districts.

Gabby O’Sullivan (East Fremantle)
Gabby was given the medal for best on ground. It was a really good performance, she set them up in the first half, she kicked a great goal and she led the stats for handballs. It was great to see her have such a great finals series, as she was also East Freo’s best player in the second semi final.

Evie Gooch (East Fremantle)
Evie was really solid through the middle, particularly in the first half where I thought she was close to the best player on ground as she set up the win. Evie stood out with the depth of her kicking

Philipa Seth (East Fremantle)
Phil ran hard all day, she was clean and used the ball really well. I thought Phil, along with Gabby and Evie, were in East Fremantle’s best four players on the day, which was really pleasing to see.

Ebony Antonio and Gemma Houghton (Swan Districts)
Swan Districts didn’t have such a good day and their primary forwards Ebony and Gemma were well held by their opponents. They would have been frustrated at times by the lack of ball getting into their forward 50, but it would be fair to say that they had days they would prefer to forget.

Ashley Sharp (Swan Districts)
Ashley had a fairly average first half but she finished the game really strongly. She was one of the players who looked like getting Swan Districts back into the game. Ashley had the most marks on the ground, she ran hard and helped out the defence and pushed forward to kick a goal. Her second half was really pleasing.

Stephanie Cain (Swan Districts)
In my opinion, Steph was Swan Districts’ best four quarter player. She ended up with 18 touches, she used the ball well, she positioned well and she laid strong tackles when needed. It was a really strong way to finish off her season.

Ange Stannett (Swan Districts)
Ange was probably beaten on the day in the middle. She still worked hard and tried to bring Swans back into it, but it wasn’t one of her better days.

Overall, we’ve been rapt with the girls’ WAFLW seasons. Not just those from East Fremantle and Swan Districts, but the other teams as well. We’re looking forward to them all having a break now to freshen up before we launch into pre-season.
