Six Fremantle-listed players were in action in round two of the WAFLW.

Senior coach Trent Cooper talks us through his thoughts on the round.

Subiaco 7.4 (46) def East Fremantle 5.5 (35)

Fremantle players in action: Leah Mascall (Subiaco), Gabby O’Sullivan (East Fremantle), Philipa Seth (East Fremantle)

Philipa Seth was one of East Freo’s better players. She played really well at half back and then turned the the tide of the match when she went into the midfield and got East Fremantle back into the game.

Gabby O’Sullivan did the same when she moved to the half-forward line, where she was involved in all of their scores in that third quarter.

We were rapt with Leah Mascall’s game. At Fremantle we’ve used her as a lockdown defender. This year we’ve asked Subi to help us out and get her some midfield minutes and she did a really good job for them. Her last quarter clearance work was crucial and was probably the influential factor in Subiaco winning the game.

Swan Districts 9.9 (63) def Claremont 4.3 (27)

Fremantle players in action: Stephanie Cain (Swan Districts), Ashley Sharp (Swan Districts), Jasmin Stewart (Claremont)

Stephanie Cain played well. We’re trying to get her to work on her versatility so she played as an inside mid for half of the game and stood up to the challenge.

Ashley Sharp also played in the midfield to develop her game further and she was one of the best players on the ground so it was pleasing to see that.

Jasmin Stewart didn’t play a game for us in 2019 so this was her first game of the season at Claremont and she ran through the midfield. It was a solid first-up effort from her and we’ll look for her to build in this role through the season.

Cooper said was really really pleased with the standard of the revamped competition.

“It was great to see our girls back out there and the standard was really pleasing,” Cooper said.

“There’s been a big improvement from round one to round two and there were some really good games. The game I watched in person between Subi and East Fremantle was a high-quality affair so hopefully we see a lot more like that throughout the year.”

Fremantle captain Kara Donnellan made her debut as the senior coach for Swan Districts in their 36-point win.

“Kara missed coaching round one as she was away and they lost and when she's come back for round two, they had a really good win,” Cooper said.

“Swan Districts were under the pump so Kara must have given them a good half time speech. I might have to get some tips off her!”
