A gallant Fremantle has gone down to Geelong by 31 points in a NAB Challenge match at Fremantle Oval on Saturday.

The Cats won 14.12 (96) to 10.5 (65) in front of an appreciative crowd of 9000 strong.

Fremantle’s early tackling pressure saw it jump the reigning premiers to take a two-goal lead at quarter-time.

Michael Johnson and Jay van Berlo kicked goals to open the second term, and when Michael Barlow added Fremantle’s sixth major, the lead was 30 points.

The Cats kicked a couple to halt the momentum - including a freakish dribble from the pocket by Cameron Mooney.

But Fremantle hit back through new recruit Justin Bollenhagen, who showed composure to slot through a goal on the run to send Freo to the main break 16-points up.

Fremantle’s lead would be short-lived as the Cats came out after half-time and slammed on three quick goals to take the lead.

The third term belonged to the reigning premiers as they kicked eight goals to none to set up a match-winning 34-point lead at three-quarter-time.

Despite the defeat, Fremantle coach Mark Harvey said he would still be focusing on the positive aspects of the game.

“We actually won three quarters - the third quarter was the issue,” he said.

Harvey said Geelong was a side that could hurt you very quickly on the scoreboard, and that Fremantle could learn from the 2009 AFL champions.

“It was a good lesson for us and hopefully we can get it right in two weeks,” he said.

Fremantle opens its 2010 campaign with its annual Starlight Purple Haze game in round one against the Adelaide Crows at Subiaco on Sunday, 28 March.
