The motivation to deliver for new senior coach Justin Longmuir has resulted in some strong showings in Wednesday’s time trial, according to midfielder Brett Bewley.

The winner of the 2km run, Bewley said that the team had been impressing on the track.

Following the time trial, the players had a short break before starting their skills session.

“The boys have come back in good shape obviously, with JL coming on board everyone wanted to put their best foot forward,” Bewley said.

“They put up a few PBs (personal best times) out there, so that was really good to see.

“I think we had maybe five to 10 minutes break and then it was straight into the skills sessions. It was good to test yourself with some skills under fatigue. That’s what we need.

“It was good to get through today and we’re looking forward to our next session on Friday.”

Bewley said he was expecting some stiff competition from runner-up Andrew Brayshaw.

The midfield duo have already been testing themselves on the track since they returned from the off-season break.

“He’s a really good runner, Andy. I’ve ran with him a couple of times over the pre-season and I knew it was going to be pretty close. It was good to get over the top of him in the end,” Bewley said.

“There was a little bit of speculation about who was going to win with Stefan (Giro) being out. I was happy just to slide under the radar a bit, being the unranked runner on the Fremantle list.”

After playing seven games in his debut AFL season, Bewley said he was working on earning regular selection in 2020.

“Pre-season is going really well. My aim is to improve on last year first and foremost and to keep getting better each session,” Bewley said.

“Hopefully, I’ll be around the mark come the pre-season games and round one.”
