Fremantle forward Gabby O’Sullivan believes resilience and hard work saw Fremantle rise over the top of the Western Bulldogs by 15 points at VU Whitten Oval on Sunday.

The message from coach Trent Cooper at three-quarter time called for his players to dig deep, as Freo lifted in a last quarter surge.

O’Sullivan said the team had belief they could finish strong and take the win on the road.

“(Trent said) just to be resilient and keep working hard,” O’Sullivan said.

“We wanted to play with a bit of grit because with all the happenings of the week (COVID-19) we weren’t sure if this could be our last time playing.

“We just stuck with it…and pulled together in that last quarter to get over the top.

“We knew that we had it in us, it was just (a matter of) when we were going to pounce.”

With crowds not permitted to enter due to COVID-19 precautions, O’Sullivan feels a quiet VU Whitten Oval worked in Freo’s favour.

Without a Bulldogs home crowd, O’Sullivan said her teammates simply relied on each other to celebrate and spur themselves on.

“It probably worked in our favour being an away game, because the Doggies always have a really good supporter base,” O’Sullivan said.

“We did have a few family members in the crowd, but we generate our own vibe and energy.

“That’s the best thing about us, it was a bit strange, but we cheered for ourselves.”

Returning to Fremantle Oval to take on Melbourne next weekend, O’Sullivan said they will look to take advantage of the Demons recent travel schedule.

The 25-year-old said the team is confident they can match it with Melbourne, as Fremantle look to continue their unbeaten run to seven games.

"Melbourne are a strong team and obviously they have done a bit of travel to Alice Springs and then they will travel to Perth,” O’Sullivan said.

“We will look to capitalise on some of that, but we know if we just play the game that we can play - that fast and free flowing footy – then we should be right and hang in with any team.”
